Tournament Feedback - Help us Improve!

Hi all,

Now that tournaments are live (in their first iteration) we are looking for ways to improve them as well as squish any bugs that we missed.

FEEDBACK
- How do you feel about the battle duration?
- How do you feel about the process of drafting?
- How do you feel about the deck building time in sealed and draft?
- How do you feel about the number of cards given for sealed?
- How do you feel about the number of tournaments running? Too many? Too few? (keep in mind that only satellite tournaments will be free to enter when the soft launch is over.)

SUGGESTIONS
- Got a good idea to improve it? Please share!
- A few ideas we have that aren't in yet include: Featured Tournaments, Invite only tournaments

BUGS
- Found a certain bug, please post as much information on how it occurred with steps leading up to it, what the error was. Screenshots would also be tremendous.

There needs to be a Turn timer for the tournaments (alongside the chess timer).
This will prevent what happened to me: I was winning, 14 to 4, and timed out because half way through the game I didn't know it was my turn.
Having both turn and chess timers will keep the game inside the time limit, but not allow them to over-blow their turns and result in an unnecessary timer loss. Players will still have the chess-timer advantage by not taking too long on their turns, but having the normal turn timer automatically end turns gives both players a safety.

Yea, like you start with 200 extra seconds, but you should still receive like 10-15 seconds at the beginning of every turn.

Actually, what I mean is having the Chess Clock and the Normal clock run at the same time.
(200 seconds total to complete the game, but during your turn, you still have the normal timer running as well so you can't over-use time accidentally, giving you the normal time bonuses as you activate abilities and play/discard as normal, but not adding to the 200sec Chess Clock that runs independent of the normal clock.)

- Have satellite tournaments run every 30 mins for each format.
- Have regular tournaments run every 2-3 hrs.
- In all tournaments have a limit of 36 players and anyone that joins beyond 36 is put in another instance of a tournament for that format.
- Have private tournaments that anyone can create for fun with no reward that can only be accessed by invite
- After beta phase is over have tournaments give out packs and gold to the top 50% and the bottom 50% given participation/tourney pts that can eventually be turned in for prizes. Gold, packs, gems etc...

2 stall bugs in matches

1. the 2 players are 'awaiting results', they have not finished any matches.

2. After finishing one game, the next game has not started, players timer increases to 10+ minutes.

Since there is no 4 card limit to what you can add to your deck for non legendaries. Should also be that way for legendaries!

I suppose they didn't think about the legendary rule. I mean what are the odds of pulling 2 rak mul. Anyway my guess is they will just leave it as is. They said they were suspending the 4 unique limit for sealed not the legendary rule.

We will be allowing you to have more than 1 of the same legendary in your deck should you pull it in sealed or draft :)

People dropping in the middle of the match should give an auto win to the other player or at least a message.

I strongly disagree. Although that is exacly what happened to me. I accidentally clicked a link and had to log back in. It took 10 seconds to get back into the game but I had auto lost both matches.

Having several seconds and being allowed to leave the page would solve the issues when the game freezes too or when you loose internet connection for a few seconds (and the game frezes because of that), because then you can just reload the page and rejoin the game only having lost a few seconds on your timer instead of all the top prizes.

Anyone playing through FB on resolution lower than 1080 is in DIRE danger of a notification popping up right over the battle button.

I had the same issue, except I didn't reload or anything. My opponent lost the first game due to time-out, then the 2nd game never started. Afaik, the entire tourny was stalled because i couldn't finish my match, even after i left.

Prizes should scale with the number of players/rounds. 1 pack for top 3 in a 12 player tournament, and also for only top 3 in a 75 player tournament, doesn't make sense.

A bit of scaling would still be nice, or just caps on number of players.. or a larger % of participants get prizes.

i.e. 1st place: rise, 2-4, eve, 4-8th core for example, dependent on tournament size.

I guess people can just drop out, as most will when only the top 4%-6% get a prize (3 out of 50, 3 out of 70).

The issue with not scaling prizes at least a bit now is people have no incentive to stay if they have no chance of top 3, so you may not get the full scope of testing you want done

Limit the # of people in a tournament please. For standard, you want more "little guys" to have a shot at wins to enhance the user experience. More total players will skew it to the big dogs. Plus, you can have less rounds needed to determine top player. Total time commitment for these events is far too high.

On draft, less cards per pack, more packs. This would allow less seconds per pack, and a faster pace.
Also, please collapse picks to have the x2 or x3 on them so you can tell card counts at a glance while drafting.

At the moment, given the time commit for a torunament, if I were paying for TCs, the rewards would have to be amazing. For the $$ *and* time spent, you need to have it be worth it.

Haven't done a sealed yet, but will add feedback as I get it.

The more cards per pack was done so that its more of an equal field rather than whoever has the best rares. Believe me while alpha testing tournaments we did 8 regular packs for draft and there was a huge discrepancy between who got all the good rares and who got the crappy ones.

What about just 8 cards per pack, and do 6 of them. 48 cards, and makes it a little quicker overall . . .

Just a thought.

We actually did that and found out the 10 card pack 5 packs was the best for keeping the playing field somewhat level. When tourneys are more streamlined and less glitchy you should see how this plays out.

The draft process was too slow and frustrating. WIth only a 5 pack pool and only one set, there's not going to be a whole lot of diversity, and let's face it a lot of the rares are situational at best in Rise...so ending up with a 50 card deck with less than 5 epics/rares is going to be common. And frustrating.

I suppose it could be mitigated with a guaranteed epic/legendary for at least every player to make it fair.

The process took way too long as well.

Not to mention the bugs freezing the tournament.

So far, not thrilled with the addition.

You can reduce your deck down to 25 cards. 5 rares in 25 is like 8 in a 40 card deck.

The "next battle in" timer keeps going up by 2 minutes every minute. Shouldn't it count down? or am I missing something?

The very first tournament froze after 5 rounds. We waited for a long time and Dave tried to fix it but nothing happened. Binoclou was first, I was second (Yakub) and Spreddo was third. We didn't get any prizes.

That's because that tournament hasn't technically ended. When it does (likely after a server reset) you will all get your packs when you log in!

when waiting for a next round sometimes people dont finish and if they dont finish, u have to wait 135min! plz let the time be shorter because then everyone is gonna leave the tourney.

The timer so the estimate till the end of the tournament right now, instead of the end of the round. It's a bug though so thanks for bringing it up!

Far, far, far, too long in constructed. Make that swiss too rather than just round after round after round. I got bored an hour in, so did a lot of others. Bring down timing a lot. I don't want to be in a tournament over an hour and a half. If you want those add different timed ones, but they are as boring as heck. I won most but just had to quit because it was boring and too late.

Draft however I like but they should be 2/3 rares, 5/4 uncommons and 3 commons. Many times I ended with a ton of commons which I personally didn't want to use but was forced to. I know that the first week is free but even then the prizes for entering aren't great. I understand the point is to have fun but I think you should give something, even as small as 750 gold to top 50%.

Overall I like them, but I probably wont be participating in anymore as they drag on a tad too much.

I agree, the timers and timing has issues to be ironed out.

Waiting indefinitely for the next round, only to be given 60 seconds notice while on the toilet is
hard to deal with when the tournament goes on for 2+ hours, never knowing when you will get a break
or how long that break might last.

In order for it to have a clear winner it needs to be 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64. So I think 16 or 32 would be good.

So far every tourny on live has frozen at some point. Not sure what is causing it. Possibly from people dropping.

Bug
Transform Potion doesn't work properly with Tournament-Version-Amorya.
Her status effects are ignored.
Example:
a 4/2 creature is given +1(sword) from one ability and +1(heart) from the other ability,
making it a 5/3. Then I use Transform Potion. The creature should be a 3/5, but instead
becomes a 2/4.

Thats a general bug with transform pot. It doesn't register strong effects right now.

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions guys, we had at most 12 players in the closed beta in any tournament so some of these bugs are totally new to us so stay patient. We will also review all your suggestions before we go 100% live next week. Keep the suggestions comming.

Decks that are used in arenas cannot have sideboard attached to them somehow... so basically it forces people to spend two decks slots for one deck - one without sideboard for arena and one with sideboard for tournaments.

Also a question - are you planning on creating more than one default tourney hero? Like you have special Amorya now, but it doesnt really support deck building diversity. I would like to see maybe 5 different special tourney heroes to choose from perhaps.

And lastly a suggestion - since you cannot leave the tourney lobby once youre in, it sometimes gets very boring when youre waiting for other to finish their games. Maybe there could be like a small window with some minigame in it... you know some flashy clicky thingy to waste your time on. The minigame could give you something like 1 gold for playing it or something.

The modified amorya was included so that the cards could speak more or less for themselves in sealed/draft.

I agree, being locked into the tournament makes the wait very boring indeed, especially during the 15 minutes waiting for players to join. I could be shopping cards, playing in a guild war, or building decks instead of just waiting. Only thing to do is open a new tab and do something else, hoping not to forget to play in 15 minutes (unless you are playing via Steam or some mobile device where you might just be screwed).

I think that the maximum amount of time to choice a card should be 10 seconds. Each turn should last 20 seconds. A maximum amount of player MUST be fixed and tournaments should start fastly. For example every time a tournament is full, another should start

I felt that tournaments took too long - the worst part being that after I finished my two or three battles I would have to just wait and wait for other people to finish. I think there is too much possible discrepancy in the best of three match times: the max possible time is both players taking 200 seconds (400 seconds) and playing all three rounds, which is 1200 seconds or 20 minutes. Waiting for up to 20 minutes for each of 5 rounds is very frustrating, especially for just a single pack as a possible reward. If my opponent immediately forfeits it's basically just gonna be a ~15 minute wait with absolutely no playing that round. Ways to address this include putting a cap on the number of people in a tournament, or reducing total time to 150 seconds. Theoretically a tournament could be split into multiple smaller tournies if there are a lot of people. Or allow us to grind some gold in campaign or guild wars while we wait (not a joke).

Also having a random chance to get a pack just for staying until the end of the tournament will give people some incentive to stay even if they lose the first round. Ideally, rewards would be something like:
top 5 - packs, tournament ticket
top 50% - 2500 gold (half a core gold), ticket
stayed until the end - random chance of a core gold pack just for participating and sticking with it
Rewards scaled to number of players in the tournament, of course

Every time i try to click on the Tournaments in main loby, upper message appears and im automaticaly disconnected from Kingdoms.

I didn't get the pack from the first tournament, but got some message telling me i ended up 41st (was first when it got stuck). And now i can't get into the tournaments section because everytime i do so it makes a strange bug which is this : http://snag.gy/3LUfT.jpg
Any way to fix this please?

I'm in the same boat as bino - I was second in that tourney. It still hasn't registered as being finished as far as I can tell..
